Selous Game Reserve is one of Africa’s largest and most pristine wildlife sanctuaries, covering approximately 54,600 km²—making it four times the size of the Serengeti and roughly the size of Switzerland. Located in southern Tanzania, this vast protected wilderness has remained largely untouched for thousands of years.
The reserve is drained by the mighty Rufiji River and is home to incredible biodiversity, including over 2,000 plant species, more than 430 bird species, and around 60 mammal species. Wildlife enthusiasts can expect to see lions, leopards, buffalos, hippos, crocodiles, and many more. The area also hosts a large population of Nile crocodiles and rare birds such as the Udzungwa forest partridge and rufous-winged sunbird.
Renowned for its rich species diversity and dense wildlife populations, Selous is a vital area for the conservation of biological diversity. Explore this breathtaking reserve on a day trip starting from Zanzibar and experience one of Africa’s premier game viewing destinations.
